Microbial Biology Registration Reminders After the First Year

Academic Calendar: The Academic Calendar, the registration calendar, and the schedule of classes are all available online. You must register before the start of classes!

New Jersey Residency: Students should apply for New Jersey residency as soon as they are eligible in order to reduce the tuition cost. Please see the directions and forms at the In State Residency for Tuition Purposes web page.

Teaching Assistants: If you are a teaching assistant you are entitled to full tuition remission. This means 16 course credits per semester. Since a TA must register for 6 E credits this means that TAs would register for a maximum of 10 credits of courses (including research). Only 72 credits are needed for the Ph.D. degree. When registering please calculate how many credits you need so that you do not go much over 72 credits when you plan to finish. If you need help with calculating your registration load please see Dr. Zylstra.

Graduate Assistants: If you are a graduate assistant you are entitled to full tuition remission. However, sometimes the funding source has limited funds for tuition. Please discuss with your research advisor and Dr. Zylstra whether you should sign up for the minimum of 3 course credits (1 credit for post-Qualifying Exam students) and 6 GA E credits or if you should sign up for the maximum of 10 course credits and 6 GA E credits. When registering please calculate how many credits you need so that you do not go much over 72 credits when you plan to finish. If you need help with calculating your registration load please see Dr. Zylstra.

Fellowships, TAs, and GAs: Students on Fellowships, Teaching Assistantships, or Graduate Assistantships should register for one of the following courses:
16:682:811 Graduate Fellowship (0 credits)
16:682:866 Graduate Assistantship (6 E credits)
16:682:877 Teaching Assistantship (6 E credits)
Very Important: You must sign up for the 682 (Microbial Biology) GA/TA/Fellowship course.

Full Time Status: Students need to register for a minimum of 9 credits for full time status. This includes E credits. Students wishing to register for less than 9 credits may do so under certain circumstances and only with the permission of Dr. Zylstra. Examples are part time students, M.S. students in their final year, post-Qualifying Exam Ph.D. students, or Ph.D. students with more than 72 credits. If you have student loans and are taking less than 9 credits please see Dr. Zylstra to process an application for an Enrollment Certificate for loan deferment. International Students may register for fewer than 9 credits per semester and still be considered full time. Please see the Reduced Credit Load Information on the Rutgers Global Web site and talk to Dr. Zylstra.

Minimum Required Courses: Ph.D. students need a minimum of 30 course credits and a minimum of 30 research credits and a minimum of 72 credits overall to graduate. Thesis M.S. students need a minimum of 24 course credits and a minimum of 6 research credits and a minimum of 30 credits overall to graduate. Non-Thesis M.S. students need a total of 30 credits to graduate including an optional 6 credits of Non-Thesis Research. It is to your advantage to finish your course work requirement as soon as possible so that you can devote all of your time to your research project. You can consult with Dr. Zylstra on your credit status or you can use the forms "Course Check for Ph.D. Graduation" or "Course Check for M.S. Graduation."

Undergraduate Courses for Graduate Credit: Certain undergraduate courses (400 level) may be taken for graduate credit. If you wish to take an undergraduate course and have it count for graduate credit this must be preapproved by Dr. Zylstra. You must use the G prefix when registering for the undergraduate course or you will not receive graduate credit.
